Do FAQs Improve AI Visibility? Our Data Says Not Really

Notified research found no meaningful relationship between FAQ sections and AI citations. Clear subheadings, fact-rich copy and useful lists performed better.

The FAQ has become the Swiss Army knife of AI optimization advice. Whatever the content problem, someone will suggest adding one.

We tested that advice. Across 22,750 corporate press releases, FAQ sections had no meaningful relationship with AI citations. The difference was -1.6%. Other structural choices performed much better:

  • Clear topical subheadings: +61%
  • High fact density: +29% to +33%
  • Bulleted lists: +16%

These are observed associations, not proof that formatting alone causes more citations. Even so, the comparison is useful. Adding an FAQ is not, by itself, an AI visibility strategy.

Why Do Clear Subheadings Outperform FAQs?

A descriptive subheading tells readers and machines what comes next. Labels such as “Key Findings,” “Financial Highlights” and “Product Availability” give each section a clear purpose. The facts are easier to find and reuse.

An FAQ is only as useful as the answers it contains. The format won’t fix vague claims, repetitive copy or a buried point. This is familiar editorial work: label the section, surface the fact and don’t make the reader hunt for what matters.

How Should PR Teams Structure Content for AI Visibility?

Say What the Section Is About

Use headings that describe the material beneath them. “What the Research Found” is more useful than “Here’s Where It Gets Interesting.” That doesn’t mean every heading needs to be dry. It just needs to do its job.

Back Up the Claim

Releases with high fact density received 29% to 33% more AI citations. Numbers, percentages, dates, dollar values and sample sizes give a claim enough substance to be evaluated and quoted.

“Significant customer interest” is open to interpretation. “12,000 registrations in 48 hours” isn’t.

Use Bullets When There’s a Real List

Bulleted lists were associated with a 16% lift in AI citations. They’re useful for findings, features, milestones and next steps. They’re less useful when an ordinary paragraph has simply been chopped into pieces.

When Does an FAQ Still Make Sense?

Keep the FAQ when people have questions that need direct answers. That might be the case when a policy change needs clarification, customers keep raising the same issue, employees need guidance on next steps or a complicated announcement is likely to cause confusion.

Use an FAQ because the audience needs one, not because an optimization checklist says AI does.

What Else Affects AI Visibility?

Notified’s full study analyzed 26,670 English-language GlobeNewswire press releases and comparative cohorts totaling more than 850,000 timestamped AI citation events. More than 99% of releases were cited by AI, but the results were uneven. The top 10% accounted for more than half of all citations.

The full Written for People. Read by Machines. report covers four groups of signals through the SOAR framework: Structure, Originality, Authority and Recency. It also examines how major AI systems find and reuse press releases, why the first version crawled matters and how citations build after publication.
